Members of the Towcester Town Football Supporters Club are celebrating after being saved from an insolvency threat by their sharp-eyed treasurer.

The club was struggling to pay its debts when newly appointed treasurer, Neil Shaw, spotted an overpayment in the club’s accounts, going back a number of years.

The discovery led to the club, which has been running since 1967, recovering a life-saving sum of more than £8,000, securing the future of their Islington Road building.

Towcester’s secretary, Dave Carvell, said: “We knew we were in financial difficulties which was devastating because a club like ours means so much to the local community and we wouldn’t want to lose that. But when Neil told us we were entitled to reclaim thousands in business rates, we just couldn’t believe it.

“We are now secure for the near future and we owe it all to Neil’s expertise. We can’t praise him enough!”

Neil Shaw added: “It’s a saving that not many small organisations are aware of but I am so pleased I could help the club in this way.

“Being their treasurer has brought together two of my interests, football and accountancy, and I hope my involvement continues for some time to come. And it goes to show that accountants can give you good news!”

Towcester Town Football Supporters Club supports junior football, with members able to enjoy watching live sporting events on Sky TV. The function room is also ideal for parties and is available to hire. For more information about membership, contact 01327 350771.
