No longer on the wrong side of the digital divide

Four villages in rural areas will now have access to superfast broadband thanks to extra Government funding.

Around 400 households in Lillingstone Lovell, Lillingstone Dayrell, Akeley and Leckhampstead will benefit from the fibre-optic cables which will carry the broadband connection.

The villages will share in a £775,000 pot granted by the Broadband Delivery UK’s rural broadband fund.

The bid for funding comes on the back of extensive canvassing and lobbying by villagers who campaigned for better access to broadband.

Jane Keys, Lillingstone Lovell Parish Council chairman, helped to set up a campaign group which joined Bucks County Council’s Broadband Community Interest Company to form the North Bucks Superfast Broadband Group.

She said: “Several local businesses were considering relocating due to extremely slow broadband, villagers are unable to work from home, our teenagers are frustrated because they can’t be part of the young digital society, and some of our farmers have to rely on neighbours to file their DEFRA returns.

“We are all so relieved that we will no longer be on the wrong side of the digital divide.”

The village communities played a part in submitting the bid for funding, including gathering statistics and information on potential use from residents, small businesses and sole traders. The rural extension project will be integrated into work being done through the Connected Counties Broadband programme in Bucks and Herts.
