fire service: Bucks Fire & Rescue Service is a step closer to sharing an emergency control room in Cambridgeshire, following a meeting of Bucks & Milton Keynes Fire Authority on Wednesday.

Members heard that a bid for the set-up costs has been submitted to the government, and that it has been confirmed there is no technological barrier to the integration of information technology systems.

Fire authority chairman David Rowlands said: “We are confident that by joining an already established and successful control room partnership in Huntingdon, and with adequate funding support, this proposal can be delivered by 1 April 2013.

“The move could potentially generate savings of £600,000 a year without compromising the safety of the public or our firefighters.”

He said the fire authority would make every effort to redeploy control room staff affected by the proposal. A final decision on the proposal to move the 999 control room to Huntingdon is expected early next year.
